About Lectionary Preaching

Most sermons preached at Tellico Village Community Church are based upon the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). This lectionary is a commonly followed schedule of readings for use in Christian worship and study. The RCL follows the Christian liturgical calendar with its various seasons and festivals. The Gospel readings are based upon a three-year cycle during which the Gospel of Matthew is studied in Year A, the Gospel of Mark in Year B, and the Gospel of Luke in Year C. The Gospel of John is studied during various seasons of the three-year cycle.

Along with the Gospel readings, related texts from the Old Testament, a Psalm, and verses from other New Testament writings are prescribed for each day of the year.

At Tellico Village Community Church, we find that lectionary preaching requires us to engage passages we might otherwise overlook. The RCL offers a welcome discipline for preaching from the whole Bible rather than the preacher's favorite verses.

While we generally follow the lectionary, we are not bound to it. Occasionally, the preachers at Tellico Village Community Church step out of the RCL to take up a topic of immediate interest.

You may find it valuable to use the RCL for your own personal study. A web-based version of the lectionary may be found at the Vanderbilt University Revised Common Lectionary site.
